Specialist, Board Certified in Veterinary Cardiology

On the Job:

Sarah Achen, DVM, DACVIM, attributes her love of science and anatomy, even at a very young age, to her grandmother. As she grew, so did her interest in veterinary medicine. Cardiology caught her attention early on in veterinary school, and became her passion during her internship.  She loves the long-term relationships that are formed with her patients and their families, and has also developed a strong interest in clinical research and teaching. Within her specialty of cardiology, she is particularly interested in heart failure therapy, management of arrhythmias, and interventional cardiology (including transvenous pacemaker therapy and non-invasive treatment of congenital heart disease).

Dr. Achen is a member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine General Exam and Cardiology Certifying Exam Review Committees. She is also a member of the following professional associations: Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Education:

Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology)
Residency, Texas A&M University, College Station
Internship, Michigan Veterinary Specialists, Southfield
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, The Ohio State University, Columbus
Bachelor’s of Science, The University of Toledo, Toledo, OH

Off Duty:

Thanks to her husband, when not working with her patients, Dr. Achen is developing newfound interests in biking, running, tennis, and golf, as well as their mutual love of travel.  Her four-legged children include Honeydeu, a hound mix and the “bestest girl in the world,” and Bubaloo, a young orange tabby who is nothing but trouble.
